For a moment, let’s hold onto what’s left of summer.
During the summer I feel alive. I feel whole. I feel like myself. I feel close to God. Maybe it’s the endless sunlight. Maybe it’s the afternoon storms. Maybe it’s the cool mornings and warm afternoons and slow evenings.
But it cannot stay summer forever.
Fall is coming.
Change has found us once again.

Today’s post comes from my collection of poetry and other words, Walk A Little Slower. I’ve never read this poem in front of a live audience, but wanted to offer it here. Take a listen.

The sun never sleeps in the summer, and I don’t want to either.
The last thing I want to miss is the rising morning mist and the fireflies in the fields at night.
I want to catch every glimmer of light that rises and falls before fall finds us.
I want to run with my bare feet through the streets again.
Ride my bike while wearing wet swim shorts again.
Have a peanut butter and blackberry jam sandwich on the beach again.
Take a nap on my back in the green grass again.
Place my bet on who will win, me or the sun, after ordering a double-scoop of chocolate chip cookie dough in a waffle cone.
Ice cream is perfect but somehow tastes better in a waffle cone.
I know summer won’t last forever and fall is coming - but it’s not here yet.
And tonight, we’ll press play on old summer nights.
Reliving the moments we can’t get back, the moments we desperately want to get back.
And tonight you’ll find us around the fire while we sit with whiskey to sip as we have a serious summer talk about what was and what could be and how we used to eat peanut butter and blackberry jam sandwiches below the sun.
Old friends talking about what only old friends could know.
And it is good to be known.
